Book Beginning – TUG OF WAR by Ross Collier

Tug of War by Ross CollierTug of War Synopsis

Captain John Garrett of the Australian Army has been ordered back to Melbourne from Townsville to investigate a suspected intelligence leak in Central Bureau.

Garrett and an American Captain, Al Tucker are placed into the unit ostensibly as intelligence officers with no one, including the current section leader Captain Anthony Myers, aware of their mission.

Tucker begins to work against Garrett who desperately tries to track down the spy operating in the city. In doing so he discovers the most closely guarded secret of the Pacific war. As he draws closer to the truth so begins a life and death battle for survival. (Kobobooks)

The Book Beginning is:

He lay on his back and stared up at the six men standing in a semi circle around him. They were smiling, laughing. They were, he concluded, happy he would die.

What a way to capture your attention.

I really enjoyed his contemporary mystery thriller Sink or Swim. With Tug of War, Ross Collier has moved to a different subject matter and genre, historical fiction. Common to both novels though are endearing characters and Collier’s accessible and engaging prose.

I don’t envy the narrator the position he is in. I suspect he will get out of it!

    Hi Joanne,

I am left wondering if he is already dying when these men find him, or if something they have done to him is the reason for his expected demise, they sound like a thoroughly unsavoury bunch if they are stood around laughing.

I am not sure that this is a book I would carry on and enjoy, however the other book of this author you reviewed ‘Sink Or Swim’ is definitely one for the reading list, so thanks for including the link,

    Yvonne

Sounds like a good book. I never think about Australians in WWII. Thanks for sharing the opening on Book Beginnings!

That opening is definitely a grabber! I think my husband would enjoy this book, and I probably would too. Sounds like a compelling story.

Can’t wait to read your review of this one. I really enjoyed this one as with all of Ross Collier’s others. :)

Creepy. Is he dreaming or is he really dying? The question of my night.
