True blue Australian spirit…

Many readers, whether in Australia or around the world will have seen footage of the devastating floods in Queensland.

As a Brisbane resident it is heartbreaking to see such damage to our beautiful city and its people. While I am extremely fortunate that my home was not affected, I have friends who were not so lucky.

Queensland Premier’s Flood Appeal

Despite the extreme sadness and loss at this time, the community spirit on display right now is truly amazing. The scenes of tens of thousands of volunteers kitted out with shovels/brooms this morning on the streets of Brisbane is just inspirational.

Dorothea Mackellar really did sum it up perfectly in the iconic Australian poem My Country:

I love a sunburnt country,
A land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges,
Of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons,
I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror –
The wide brown land for me!
