Book Lover’s Day and Bedtime Reading

Bedtime Stories

August 9th is National Book Lover’s Day (US) and to celebrate Casper, a mattress company who offers to read their customers bedtime stories, has asked us to share our favourites.

So, I am a big bedtime reader.

When you don’t need to get up early the next morning…

… there is nothing better than getting lost in a story for hours, to be transported away to another time and place.

Dramatic historical fiction can be perfect on these occasions. I’ve spent some memorable evenings with these titles.

The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz ZafonThe Signature of All Things by Elizabeth GilbertBitter Greens by Kate ForsythBeautiful Ruins by Jess WalterRules of Civility by Amor TowlesThe Book Thief Novel by Markus Zusak

On these occasions I have also been known to enjoy gritty crime and psychological thrillers, but these do come with the risk of bad guys appearing in your dreams!

When you do have to get up early in the morning…

… dipping into a book of short stories or essays can be a great way to get your daily reading fix. Here are some of the collections I highly recommend.

Only the Animals by Ceridwen DoveyHow Does One Dress to Buy Dragonfruit edited by Shannon Younglet-s-explore-diabetes-with-owlsRiding the Trains in Japan by Patrick HollandCorporeality by Hollis SeamonWatering Heaven by Peter Tieryas Liu

When your eyes are tired after a long day…

… audiobooks can be a wonderful way to  wind down. Here are a few of my most enjoyable bedtime listening-reading experiences:

Resistance is Futile by Jenny T ColganThe Earth Hums in B Flat by Mari StrachanThe Rook by Daniel O'Malley Major Pettigrew's Last Stand - Helen Simonsonthe-rosie-project-by-graeme-simsion-text-publishingDirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency by Douglas Adams 2
